YEAR 1

Dear parents,

The students have been working hard in class (a big transition from Foundation class) and more expectations in terms of reading and writing. In Literacy, we are continuing to practise reading sight words and writing about our weekends (i.e. recounts). We will work on writing more recounts next term too. We will also continue to focus on correct formations of letters of the alphabet, alphabet- sound knowledge, word and sentence structures, writing goals including finger spaces and full stops. We focussed on writing descriptions this term and while most have shown a grasp of the structure, some still need more reinforcing and therefore I will be sending a few writing tasks home to practise during the holidays.

In Maths, we have been counting backwards from 20 and writing numbers from 1-100. We also looked at completing the sequence of numbers from any given point and did some oral and written practices of skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Students also learnt to write numerals in words up to twenty, ordering numbers up to 100, measuring objects with a scale and using the terms “lighter” & “heavier” and also making patterns using colours and shapes.

In STEM, students had to design and create a table with newspaper and masking tape that was strong enough to hold the weight of 3 books. They worked in groups and really enjoyed using their imagination and creativity to build their table.

Reminders:

Please keep reading with your child during the holidays. There are lots of books to read on “Reading Eggspress” in the library section. All online homework assigned must be completed. Homework booklet has also been sent home to reinforce what’s been taught in class and have them ready to make a great start to Term 2.

Have a safe and happy holiday and enjoy the break with your child!!
